Today I decided I’m going to write a blog post every day for the rest of the month. Some days it might be short ones, some days longer ones. I will share a little bit of what I am going through and more importantly what I am learning. When I learn something I want to share it so others can benefit from it as well. Today I will share some quotes with you and I would like to know what you think of them. Do you think they are true? Do they inspire you? Do they affect you in any positive way at all?

My mom had this quote in her bedroom by the mirror. When I saw it the first time I was just a child and I didn’t understand it. But these words have returned to me later in life I know I see how it is an illuminating truth. So mind your attention and focus on what is important to you.

“If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and make a change” – Michael Jackson

The king of pop gives the best piece of advice ever in this quote. That’s my opinion. Always begin with your own mistakes, not others. So many people are hesitant to change or maybe even fighting change. There are thousands of beautiful quotes about the value of change. Let me finish off by sharing with you this one:

Theft

I thought it would never happen to me. It has happened to me. I was so naive I thought the entire world would never do me any harm. But I was wrong. I was in shock and I felt so alone, so vulnerable and so stupid when it happened. I cried my eyes out and I didn’t know what to do. How could it be true? I hoped to wake from this evil dream surrounding me. But it was not a dream. It was real life. They took my bag with all of my school supplies, my computer and my wallet. I lost all sense of logic and rationalism. In my distressed state of mind I could barely ride my bike. My eyes were wet, my mind was foggy and my body was restless. I almost got myself involved in a traffic accident, because I crossed a traffic light when I was not supposed to. My blood sugar was low, I was hungry and I was extremely upset. I felt like I had just lost in life… All of this happened yesterday.

A new place

Little more than a week ago I left my parents house and moved into a small 10 square meter room closer to the city. This room is located in an apartment I share with 3 nice young guys. Now the furniture and most of my belongings finally found their new place and I have stated establishing a new way around daily life. I enjoy being closer to the university and getting a break from my parents. Even though I love those 3 people back “home” I prefer having my own place and I feel like that has come true now.

Cooking and preparing food is now a daily chore, shopping and washing is now completely my own responsibility and social life around home has changed. But I really enjoy it. It’s all worth it for the freedom and peace I get at my new place. I’ve arranged a few social meals with my roomies, but mostly we just say “hi” or “bye” when we come or leave.

 

Understanding

Currently exams are approaching rather quickly. I need to get ready and my main focus in my preparations is to understand the subjects. These are some of my notes for these subjects I really struggle with. In hindsight I see I should have taken them during the semester, not just before the exam… But oh well, now I’ll just try to get the best out if it. Today I did not get to my goal of studying, but I did achieve quite a bit and that’s the most important thing. I like to make them as visual as possible. Drawings are great for my understanding of the concept and they are easy to identify when looking through many pages in a short amount of time.

Notes are essential for understanding and remembering new and complicated concepts. I wish my notetaking was better. That’s why I practice. In high school I wished I had more and better notes when approaching the exams. I think it would have helped me a lot. I never mastered the notetaking skill and gave up on it a little. In the end I just had a few pages here and there,but nothing substantial. This year in university I want to change that. I will take notes continuously and be grateful for it in the end. That’s my goal!

I picked the word “understanding” today as seen on the picture. My first thought was my studies and the coming exams. So I decided ro commit even more to my notetaking, since that is a major help for me when learning something. I you cannot learn something without understanding it. I recommend good notetaking to all of you as well, whether you study or not.

Entering a new year

Now that 2016 has ended I would like to share with you biggest achievements of the last 365 days:

  • Passed my zip wire assessment
  • Passed my aerial trek assessment
  • Completed an unknown amount of succesful sessions in a variety of activities
  • Made it to round two in my first salsa competition
  • Traveled to Switzerland to stay with a person I’ve never seen privately before
  • Wrote a mission statement
  • Passed my 3G swing assessment
  • Passed my abseiling assessment
  • Passed my multi ropes assessment
  • Started journaling
  • Started meditating
  • Shot 6 bullseyes in a row
  • Got countless compliments for my salsa and bachata dancing
  • Made long lasting friends from around the world
  • Made countless costumers smile and appriciate my work
  • Explored my INFJ personality
  • Explored my Enneagram type 1 personality
  • Read “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and used it actively
  • Moved to a different Scout Activity Centre where I feel like I fit in better
  • Completed my placement with volunteer work abroad
  • Sold my first gig on fiverr (totally underpriced though)
  • Launched my blog on wordpress, made 50 posts, gained 20 likes and gathered 25 followers
  • Wrote the first few pages of a self help book
  • Got rid of more than a thousand sheets of paper I don’t need anymore
  • Started university and lasted the year out
  • Received my first 5 ECTS points
  • Passed my first exam at university
  • Hosted a succesful teambuilding event for my co-students at university
  • Became 15% fluent in Spanish
  • Got a job as a mentor (tutor/homework helper) 
  • Had more than 20 hours of teaching and helping
  • Received positive feedback from all of my students and their families
  • Became 21% fluent in French
  • Wrote more than 30 thousand words on the INFJ forum

What have you achieved in 2016? Write it down. I did the same for 2015. Instead of making a new years resolution I make these lists. I’m exited to look back at them in a few years to remind myself I’m moving forward in life. This is strongly recommended for everyone, you get a really good feeling when you realised that you actually did a lot of important things in the year that have passed.

New years eve was celebrated with my uncle and cousins. The TV signal failed, so we couldn’t watch the HRH the Queen’s New Years Speech. Besides eating and watching the fireworks I spend the time trying to assemble this puzzle.

Naked emotions

The second action on my 7 day self love challenge is to introduce yourself to yourself naked in front of a mirror. So that’s what I did. It actually felt really good and liberating in some sense. I noted down my emotions as requested and that’s what’s on the picture. I like this challenge so far. I recommend you taking this challenge as well. You have the link right here.

Tidy, clean and de-cluttered

Well lets say my tidy up project is… still in progress…

One of my holiday projects is to tidy up, declutrer and rededorate my room. I feel like this is a never ending process especially the de-cluttering part. New things and papers seem to come alle thw time and for some reason I struggle to get rid of them again. I do believe that tidiness is important for a happy life though so I’m determined to cut down on all the mess. This also applies to the “invisible” mess in the drawers, boxes and cupboards. 

A piece of advise for you all out there. If you havent used or missed some thing for a year, get rid of it. Chances are you will either be happy to have less clutter and not miss it at all, unless you know you are going to use it for something specific in the near future. For example I have 3 big boxes under my bed with kitceh gear and other stuff for the day I move away from home. Some of it has been there for more than 2 years, but I know it will have a use within a few years.

Expectancy

Christmas is a time filled with expectations. The food has to be perfect, your hoping for the very best gifts and you are lloking forward to a wonderful time with your loved ones. Theres barely any room for mistakes this day. 

I’ve been told multiple times bot to have high hopes or I will meet a lot if disappointment. That is true, but it’s also really sad I think. You need to dare dreaming, dare hoping for the best. If not, you will just get use to the ordinary and accept mediocrity. I don’t think it should be like that. Strive for the very best and allow yourself to expect as well sometimes. Otherwise the average will just be a self fulfilling prophesy.

On the subject I can add for fun, that I had power failure today for the first time in years. Power and water is something most of us expect to have available right at hand all the time. Many depend on it for different reasons. Our power supply company has promiesed that it will be back within an hour, but who knows. 

Gifts

Today I did some Christmas shopping after turning in my semester project at university. Now I have all the gifts for my family members which I’ll celebrate Christmas eve with. I even have a few extra things for my mum, simply because I love her and she has been so supportive and lovely during this tough time of long days with hard work on my project. I’m looking forward to give all these wonderful things to the people I love. My brother and I are giving the things together. It’s absolutely wonderful to be so good friends with my brother and we really enjoy doing things together. Relationships with friends and family are the key to a happy life I believe. Therefore I intend to dedicate at least half om my holidays to the people I love and care for. The rest will simply be recharging time and time for self improvement in different ways.  


Soon I’ll have to go home, because I’ve spend so much money today already. Remember the best gifts are not necessarily expensive, but they are personal and full love and care.
